Description
- Total knee arthroplasty—resurfacing of the articular surfaces
of the knee with metal and interposed plastic liner—is a highly effective
treatment for patients with disabling knee arthritis.
- The components are shaped to conform to the previous joint geometry.

Incidence
- 61% of total knee replacements occur in females (1).
- In 2003, 418,000 surgeries were performed in the United States

- The number of knee replacements performed per year continues
to rise.
- Patients had an average age of 67 years at the time of
