BASICS
Description
- Yersinia enterocolitica is a facultative, non–lactose-fermenting, urease-positive, Gram-negative coccobacillus.
- 34 serotypes have been recognized with serotypes 0:3, 8, and 9 the most common.
General Prevention
- Infection control:
- Enteric precautions are indicated for patients with enterocolitis until symptoms resolve.
- General measures:
- Attempts to eliminate reservoirs and reduce frequency of ingesting contaminated foods and beverages are necessary.
- Uncooked meats, especially pork and unpasteurized milk, as well as preparation of meats near or during preparation of infant bottles for feeding, are common sources of infection.
Epidemiology
- Most infected individuals are young children.
- Y. enterocolitica has been isolated from contaminated water, soil, wild and domestic animals, and unpasteurized milk products.
