BASICS
Description
  • Yersinia enterocolitica is a facultative, non–lactose-fermenting, urease-positive, Gram-negative coccobacillus.
  • 34 serotypes have been recognized with serotypes 0:3, 8, and 9 the most common.
General Prevention
  • Infection control:
    • Enteric precautions are indicated for patients with enterocolitis until symptoms resolve.
  • General measures:
    • Attempts to eliminate reservoirs and reduce frequency of ingesting contaminated foods and beverages are necessary.
    • Uncooked meats, especially pork and unpasteurized milk, as well as preparation of meats near or during preparation of infant bottles for feeding, are common sources of infection.
Epidemiology
  • Most infected individuals are young children.
  • Y. enterocolitica has been isolated from contaminated water, soil, wild and domestic animals, and unpasteurized milk products.
