BASICS
Aortic Stenosis (as)
Description
  • Severity of aortic stenosis is related to aortic valve area:
    • Normal aortic valve area ~3.0–4.0 cm2
    • Mild AS: >1.5 cm2
    • Moderate AS: 1.0–1.5 cm2
    • Severe AS: <1.0 cm2
  • In patients with a larger body habitus, the same valve area may result in a more significant limitation to ventricular outflow than that seen in a smaller individual. Some experts recommend normalizing aortic valve area per meter squared of body surface area.
  • The timing of surgery is based on symptoms of angina, syncope, heart failure, or degree of critical narrowing of the valve.
Aortic Regurgitation (Ar)
