BASICS
Description
- Acute pelvic pain is a relatively common complaint of reproductive-aged
women, but can occur in premenarchal and postmenopausal patients as well.
- Acute pelvic pain is the sudden onset of pain in the lower abdominal
and pelvic region and is typically due to ischemia or injury to a viscous
organ with autonomic reflex responses.
- In addition to pain, patients may experience nausea/vomiting,
fever/chills, restlessness, sweating, or back pain depending on the etiology
and/or intensity of the pain.
- Most commonly, acute pelvic pain has a gynecologic, urologic,
or gastroenterologic cause.
