Description

Clinically significant emotional or behavioral symptoms as a response to an identifiable stressor or stressors; characterized by distress in excess of what would be expected given the nature of the stressor or by significant social, occupational, or academic impairment. The experience of pain and its consequences (e.g., functional limitations, loss of income, effects on relationships) qualify as stressors.

Although apparently common, prevalence rates vary widely according to specific population and assessment methods

  • Community samples of children, adolescents, and elderly: 2% to 8%
  • General hospital inpatients referred for mental health consultation: Up to 12%
  • Mental health outpatients: 10% to 30%
