Description
  • Chronic minor depressive disorder, less severe than major depressive disorder but still resulting in persistent unhappiness that is not disabling but keeps one from functioning or feeling well.
  • Greatly increases risk of subsequent major depressive episodes.
  • May be a vulnerability factor in chronic pain conditions.
Epidemiology
Prevalence
  • Lifetime prevalence: approximately 6%
  • Point prevalence: approximately 3%
  • No difference in prevalence between gender during childhood, but two to three times more common in women than men
  • Past-year prevalence among persons with chronic pain in a nationally representative sample: 5.2%
  • Pain clinic sample: current rate of 26.8% in women and 20.5% in men
