BASICS
Description
- Meralgia paresthetica (MP) is a mononeuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN), a purely sensory nerve that innervates the anterolateral aspect of the thigh.
- LFCN usually is derived from one of several different combinations of the lumbar nerve roots L1, L2, and L3.
- LFCN emerges from the lateral aspect of the psoas muscle and travels along the retroperitoneal space across the ilium toward the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS). It enters the anterior region of the thigh by passing deep to, through, or superficial to the inguinal ligament.
