Description
- Transverse myelitis (TM) is a focal inflammatory process of the spinal cord with subsequent and variable motor, sensory, and autonomic dysfunction attributable to spinal cord pathology.
- Myelitis refers to spinal cord inflammation, whereas transverse refers to involvement across one level of the cord.

Incidence
One to eight new cases per million per year.
Prevalence
All ages may be affected:
- Bimodal peaks between 10 and 19 years and 30 and 39 years
