Description
  • Quality prenatal care includes a thorough history of maternal medical risk factors, family history, and psychosocial issues.
  • There is limited evidence as to the optimum number of prenatal visits.
    • The average number of prenatal visits in developed countries is 7–11.
    • Frequency of visits should be based on the initial risk assessment.
  • Usual schedule of United States prenatal visits:
    • Monthly beginning with preconception care until 30–32 weeks
    • Every 2 weeks until 36 weeks gestation, then weekly until delivery.
General Prevention
  • General age-appropriate preventive care
  • Prevention of neural tube defects
    • Folic acid supplementation at least 1 month prior to conception
  • Genetic risk factor screening
