Description

70% of women of reproductive age are sexually active and do not want to become pregnant, but could become pregnant if they or their partners do not use contraception or if their method fails.

General Prevention
  • Choosing a contraceptive:
    • Consider efficacy, ease of use, visibility to partner, duration of efficacy, return to fertility on discontinuation, non-contraceptive health benefits, potential contraindications, and acceptability of side effect profile.
    • All forms of contraception safe during lactation:
      • Estrogen containing contraceptives may transiently decrease milk supply.
      • Intrauterine device (IUD) or depot medroxy-progesterone acetate (DMPA) are options.
      • Women breastfeeding infant <6 months (without formula supplementation) and without return of menses may rely on lactational amenorrhea as contraception.
