Description

Bladder tumors encompass benign lesions, indolent low-grade, and aggressive high-grade malignancies.

Epidemiology
  • 4th most common cancer in men, 12th most common cancer in women
  • Male > Female (3:1)
  • 2× more common in White than Black men
  • 1.5× more common in White than Black women
  • For malignant tumors: 70,980 new cases and 14,330 deaths in the US 2009 (1)
  • Median age: 69 in men, 71 in women
  • 9× the incidence
  • 2nd most prevalent malignancy in middle aged and elderly men
Risk Factors
  • Malignant bladder tumors
  • Smoking:
    • Dose-related, with a 15–20-yr latency
    • 4× increased incidence of bladder tumors
    • 2nd-hand smoke is a risk factor
