Description

Infection with the hepatitis A virus (HAV) primarily involving the liver

Epidemiology
ALERT: Pediatric Considerations
  • Disease is often milder or asymptomatic in pediatric population.
  • 70% of infections are asymptomatic in children <6 years of age.
  • Hepatitis A infection severity increases with age.
Incidence
  • In 2007 there were 2,979 HAV infections reported in the US.
  • Prior to release of HAV vaccine, there were 22,000–36,000 cases reported per year in the US (1)[B].
  • Estimated cases: 25,000 HAV infections in 2007 (lowest ever recorded in US)
  • 1.1/100,000 incidence in US
  • Predominant sex: Male = Female
