Description
  • Primary mood disorder characterized by sadness or irritability and a loss of self-worth and interest in typically pleasurable activities
  • Depression in adolescents is undertreated, as an estimated 70–80% of these patients do not receive appropriate care.
  • Dysthymic disorder is differentiated from major depression by less intense symptoms that are more persistent, lasting at least 1 year.
  • Depressive disorder NOS is diagnosed when an adolescent presents with depressive symptoms but does not meet the criteria for other diagnoses.
  • Treatment-resistant depression is a failure of treatment with 2 antidepressants administered in adequate dosage for at least 6 weeks.
