BASICS
Description
  • Dissociative disorders bring about a sudden change in state of consciousness, identity, motor behavior, thoughts, feelings, and perception of reality so that these functions do not operate congruently.
  • Numerous pathologic symptoms can be experienced, but all patients experience dysphoria, suffering, and maladaptive functioning.
  • Disorders include dissociative amnesia, dissociative fugue, dissociative identity disorder, depersonalization disorder, and dissociative disorder not otherwise specified. Some authors may include somnambulism (sleepwalking disorder), conversion reactions, pseudo-epilepsy, and (in some cultures) a variety of possession syndromes.

  • Decrease in frequency and intensity of dissociative symptoms; medication side effects are more likely
