Epidemiology

Incidence

Incidence of complications can vary with type of operation, operative time, hospital, surgeon, and patient characteristics amongst other factors.

  • Mortality rate in general and vascular surgery patients is 3.5–6.9%. (1)
  • Overall complication rate in general and vascular surgery patients is 24.6–26.9%. (1)
  • Postoperative fever is very common. Incidence ranges widely (14–91%) depending on definition and patient population (2)
